Energy Secretary Chris Wright ran headfirst into the difference Thursday when Fox News anchor Bret Baier challenged him over two increasingly difficult issues for the Trump administration: America&#8217;s supposed &#8220;control&#8221; of the Strait of Hormuz and energy prices that remain painfully high for American consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t an interview on MSNBC or a confrontation with a Democratic member of Congress. It happened on Fox News, and Baier wasn&#8217;t particularly interested in accepting the administration&#8217;s claims without evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If America Has &#8220;Total Control,&#8221; Where Are the Ships?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first problem was the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump has repeatedly portrayed the United States as being firmly in control of the strategically critical waterway. His rhetoric has become increasingly extraordinary, including his recent declaration that he may eventually make the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Baier presented Wright with a much less triumphant picture. Citing vessel-tracking data, Baier showed that ship traffic through the strait remained dramatically below its prewar level. Before the conflict began, roughly 130 vessels were reportedly transiting the waterway each day. The five-day average presented during the interview was around 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wright disputed the accuracy of those numbers. He argued that many ships traveling through the region have switched off their transponders because of security concerns, meaning conventional vessel-tracking systems are under counting actual traffic. He told Baier that approximately 14 million to 15 million barrels per day were leaving the Persian Gulf region, compared with roughly 20 million barrels before the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That prompted Baier to ask the obvious question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Mr. Secretary, you can concede, can&#8217;t you, that the U.S. doesn&#8217;t have total control over the Strait of Hormuz?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wright didn&#8217;t concede it. Instead, he accused Iran of attempting to hold the world economy &#8220;hostage&#8221; and acknowledged that Tehran was creating difficulties for its neighbors and the global economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baier&#8217;s response cut through the rhetoric:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That does not sound like total control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s the problem with governing through superlatives. If the president repeatedly tells Americans that the United States has complete control over a strategic waterway, eventually somebody is going to compare that claim with what is actually happening there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Administration Has a Data Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair to Wright, the precise number of vessels moving through Hormuz is difficult to establish. The EIA describes the Strait of Hormuz as a major global oil chokepoint and says its effective closure following the outbreak of the conflict significantly disrupted global oil flows. Even after the June agreement intended to reopen the waterway, the agency has projected a gradual recovery rather than an immediate return to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there is a perfectly reasonable argument that some vessel-tracking estimates understate the amount of traffic moving through Hormuz. There is a much harder argument to make that this constitutes &#8220;total control.&#8221; Those are two very different claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then Baier Pulled Out the Gas Prices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interview didn&#8217;t get any easier for Wright when Baier turned to another issue Americans don&#8217;t need a foreign-policy briefing to understand: the price at the pump. AAA put the national average for regular gasoline at roughly <strong>$4.07 per gallon<\/strong> on August 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baier asked when Americans could expect gas and oil prices to come down. Wright acknowledged that gasoline prices were elevated and said the administration&#8217;s objective remains getting them back toward $3 per gallon. As for when?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s certainly true. Energy markets are complicated, and no administration controls the price of gasoline with a giant lever underneath the Resolute Desk. Wars, refinery capacity, global production, sanctions, demand, shipping disruptions, natural disasters and decisions by foreign governments can all affect what Americans eventually pay at the pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But presidents don&#8217;t get to take credit only when prices fall. Trump spent years blaming Joe Biden personally for high gasoline prices, while Republicans routinely displayed gasoline prices as evidence of Biden&#8217;s economic failures. If the occupant of the White House supposedly owns the price at the pump when the other party is in power, that standard doesn&#8217;t magically disappear when your own guy moves back into the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Baier Had the Receipts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came perhaps the most damaging portion of the interview. Baier played Wright&#8217;s own words from a November 2025 appearance on the same program, when Wright was considerably more optimistic about where Americans&#8217; electricity bills were headed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Wright predicted that the country would soon see an end to rising electricity prices, saying he hoped that would happen during the first half of 2026. Gasoline was up <strong>26.7%<\/strong>, electricity was up <strong>4.0%<\/strong>, and piped natural gas was up <strong>3.0%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those numbers don&#8217;t mean Wright personally caused every increase. The war with Iran dramatically changed the global energy environment after his November prediction. But they do mean his prediction was wrong, and Baier made him confront it on television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wright Blames Renewables \u2014 But That Doesn&#8217;t Erase the Promise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wright responded by arguing that electricity prices behave differently from gasoline prices, describing the electrical system as something more like a &#8220;battleship&#8221; that changes direction slowly. He also blamed renewable-energy policies adopted during the Biden administration for contributing to higher electricity costs and pointed to nuclear-power restarts and new energy infrastructure as part of the administration&#8217;s longer-term solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those arguments deserve to be evaluated on their merits. There are legitimate debates over grid reliability, renewable-energy subsidies, transmission infrastructure, nuclear power, natural gas and the enormous new electricity demand created by data centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But none of that changes what Wright told Americans last November. The administration predicted relief, and Americans are still waiting for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump&#8217;s Iran Policy Is Reaching Americans at Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the Strait of Hormuz stops being an abstract foreign-policy story. Most Americans will never see the strait, but they don&#8217;t need to. Disruptions there ripple through oil markets, shipping networks and eventually consumer prices. The Trump administration can argue that Iran bears responsibility for restricting shipping through the region, and Tehran&#8217;s actions unquestionably matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Trump also chose America&#8217;s strategy for confronting Iran. His administration owns the consequences of that strategy just as every administration owns the consequences of the policies it chooses. If the result is prolonged instability in one of the world&#8217;s most important energy corridors, Americans are entitled to ask whether the strategy is working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reality Doesn&#8217;t Care About the Talking Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most revealing thing about Baier&#8217;s interview wasn&#8217;t that a Fox News anchor challenged a Republican administration. Journalists are supposed to challenge government officials. The revealing part was how quickly some of the administration&#8217;s sweeping claims became much harder to defend once specific numbers entered the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Total control&#8221; sounds powerful; dramatically reduced shipping traffic sounds different. Promises of falling electricity prices sound reassuring; electricity prices rising another 4% sounds different. Getting gasoline back toward $3 sounds great; paying more than $4 today feels different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration is free to argue that its strategy will ultimately succeed. Wright may even prove correct that energy prices will eventually fall and traffic through Hormuz will recover. But Americans don&#8217;t pay their electric bills with future promises. They pay them with today&#8217;s dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And no amount of political messaging can indefinitely conceal the difference between what an administration says is happening and what people can see happening around them.
