Source: Pasco County Mosquito Control District.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declaration, announced Sept. 23, allows the county administrator and emergency management director to waive routine procedures to protect public health and safety. It remains in effect for seven days unless the county administrator rescinds it earlier, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofportrichey.gov\/m\/newsflash\/Home\/Detail\/82\">official announcement published by the City of Port Richey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The county said it is supporting the Pasco County Mosquito Control District and the Florida Department of Health in Pasco County as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A regional outbreak, with different county totals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emergency comes amid dengue activity across Tampa Bay, but regional figures should not be confused with Pasco County\u2019s own case count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Sept. 18 report citing Florida health officials, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/hillsborough-dengue-cases-jump-134-aerial-mosquito-treatments-continue.amp\">FOX 13 reported<\/a> 134 cases in Hillsborough County, seven in Pinellas and two in Pasco. Those figures reflect an earlier reporting period, not a newly confirmed Sept. 24 total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emergency announcement does not provide an updated case count or establish that Pasco experienced a sudden increase in infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DOH-Pasco had already <a href=\"https:\/\/pasco.floridahealth.gov\/2026\/08\/26\/doh-pasco-issues-updated-mosquito-borne-illness-advisory\/\">announced a confirmed human dengue case on Aug. 26<\/a>, saying it was coordinating surveillance and prevention efforts with mosquito-control officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What residents can do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health officials urge residents to follow \u201cDrain and Cover\u201d precautions to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent bites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pasco.floridahealth.gov\/2026\/08\/26\/doh-pasco-issues-updated-mosquito-borne-illness-advisory\/\">DOH-Pasco recommends<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emptying standing water at least weekly from flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, gutters, pool covers and other containers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wearing long sleeves and pants when practical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using an EPA-registered insect repellent according to its label.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repairing window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents can contact the Pasco County Mosquito Control District at <strong>727-376-4568<\/strong> or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/pascomosquito.org\">pascomosquito.org<\/a>. Symptoms can include fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint pain, nausea, vomiting and a rash, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/dengue\/signs-symptoms\/index.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People with symptoms who live in or have recently visited an area with dengue risk should contact a health care provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Severe dengue is a medical emergency. Warning signs include abdominal pain or tenderness, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, and extreme tiredness or restlessness.
