A Hillsborough County middle school teacher is facing three felony charges after investigators say he exchanged inappropriate communications with a former teenage student for years, including alleged conduct involving child sexual abuse material.
Christian Schneider, 31, was arrested Aug. 14 following an investigation by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Schneider was working as a teacher at Memorial Middle School when detectives began investigating him July 28. Team HCSO
Authorities say the investigation involved a former teenage student from Franklin Middle School and that Schneider acknowledged having inappropriate communications with the student dating back to 2023.

Detectives Began Investigating in July
HCSO says detectives opened their investigation into Schneider on July 28.

Authorities Say the Communications Dated Back to 2023
One of the more significant details released by investigators concerns how long the alleged communications may have been occurring.
According to HCSO, Schneider told deputies that he had engaged in inappropriate communication with the student since 2023. Team HCSO
That potentially places the beginning of the alleged conduct approximately three years before his arrest.
However, the sheriff’s office has not publicly provided a detailed timeline showing when Schneider taught the student, when the student left Franklin Middle School, or whether the alleged communications continued uninterrupted throughout that period.

That leaves an important part of the timeline unresolved: exactly when the teacher-student relationship existed relative to the communications investigators are now examining.
Three Felony Charges
Schneider was arrested Aug. 14 and booked on three felony counts.
According to HCSO and booking information reported after his arrest, the charges are:
Two counts of Solicitation or Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material — second-degree felonies.

That creates another distinction worth noting.
Although authorities say inappropriate communications dated back to 2023, the currently reported criminal charges identify alleged offenses occurring on July 3.
The public information released so far does not explain precisely what investigators allege happened that day or how the July 3 conduct relates to the broader communications HCSO says stretched back several years.
Schneider Was Released on Bond
Schneider was booked into custody during the afternoon of Aug. 14.
According to booking information cited by multiple news outlets, bond was set at $2,500 on each charge, for a combined $7,500 surety bond. Schneider was released early the following morning after posting bond. New York Post
His release does not resolve the charges against him. The criminal case can continue while a defendant is out on bond, subject to whatever conditions the court has imposed.
At this stage, Schneider has been accused—not convicted—of the offenses.
A Position of Trust
Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized Schneider’s position as an educator when announcing the arrest.
“Teachers hold a position of trust that comes with enormous responsibility.”
Chronister said exploiting that trust represents more than an alleged criminal offense and pledged that detectives would continue aggressively investigating cases involving abuse of a position of authority over children. Team HCSO
That concern is particularly relevant because investigators aren’t describing the alleged victim simply as a teenager with whom Schneider communicated.
They identify the person as his former student.
The precise nature and duration of that educational relationship, however, have not yet been publicly detailed.
Important Questions Remain Unanswered
Despite the seriousness of the charges, HCSO’s initial announcement leaves several significant questions unanswered.

There is also a distinction between HCSO’s description of the charges and some secondary reporting.
The sheriff’s official release describes the two counts as “Solicitation or Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.” Some news reports shortened that description to possession of child sexual abuse material. Because the official charging description encompasses solicitation or possession, State of Disorder is using HCSO’s wording unless subsequent court records establish more specifically what prosecutors allege. That’s especially important in a criminal case involving allegations this serious.
The Investigation Remains Active
HCSO has described the investigation as active and says additional information will be released as it becomes available. Team HCSO
That means the three charges announced Aug. 14 may not necessarily represent the final scope of the investigation.
It also means some of the unanswered questions surrounding the case may eventually be addressed through arrest affidavits, charging documents, court filings or additional statements from investigators.
For now, the publicly established facts are narrower: Schneider has been arrested and charged with three felonies; investigators allege inappropriate communications with a former teenage student dating to 2023; and the criminal case remains unresolved.
Schneider is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
